Frederick Jacobs was born in Withersfield (Risbridge Q4-1877 4A:177), baptised in St Mary's Withersfield on 9th December 1877, son of John and Elizabeth JACOBS (née HAZELWOOD).

1881 census...Aged 3, he was at Wratting Road, Withersfield with his grandfather William HAZELWOOD [66] farm labourer; his grandmother Sarah HAZELWOOD [63]; his father John JACOBS [25] farm labourer; his mother Elizabeth [22]; sisters Ada M [2] and Edith [3 months]. All were born in Withersfield.

1891 census...Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was at Willow Bank, Withersfield with his parents; sisters Ada, Edith, Emily [8], Sarah [6] and Mehitabel[3]; grandmother Sarah HAZELWOOD. All the new children were born in Withersfield

He enlisted in the Suffolk Artillery on 7th January 1897, giving his age as 18 years 2 months, a hair weaver, born and living in Withersfield, next of kin, father John. He was 5 feet 10 inches (177.8 cm)tall, weighed 128 lbs (58.1 kg), chest 32.5" to 34.5" (82.6 to 87.6 cm), hazel eyes, brown hair, Church of England. He transferred to the Royal Artillery on 10th June 1897.



1901 census...Not found in this census, probably due to Army service. At Rose Hill Cottages, Withersfield were his father John JACOBS [45] horsekeeper; his mother Elizabeth [42]; sister Ellen M [13] and brother Victor W [3].

1911 census...Not found in this census, probably due to Army service. At Rose Hill Cottages, Withersfield were his parents and brother Victor William (farm labourer). His mother had lost 5 of her 13 children. His father died in 1920.

In Qtr 4 of 1911, in Dundalk, Ireland, he married Elizabeth Fitzgerald (b.16-8-1882) and at the time of his death they lived at 5 O'Connells Terrace, Barracks Street, Dundalk, Ireland.

His brother Ernest died of his wounds in France in 1916 see here



I knew Scotlands People would come in handy one day..proof of identity of Frederick at last !



He enlisted in Haverhill. His regular service in the Army (always a total of 12 years) would have ended in 1909, and he would not have been liable to be mobilised as a Reservist in 1914.
He died of illness (attributable to war service) in Perth Military Hospital at 6:30 am 6th January 1919.
