Herbert BUGG was born 1891 in Long Melford(4th qtr 1891 Sudbury 4a:701) the son of Harriett BUGG.
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Bridge Street, Alpheton with his uncle George MORTLOCK [51] farm labourer born Shimpling; his aunt Ellen MORTLOCK [51] born Brasfield St.Clare; his grandmother (Ellen's mother) widowed Sarah BUGG; his mother Harriett BUGG, [39] single, born Gt Welnetham; brothers (?) Frederick [20], Sidney [14] and Clifford [12] farm labourers, all born Long Melford, Stanley [6] born Long Melford; sisters (?) Bertha [4] and Alice [2] born Alpheton. 1911 census...Aged 19, a domestic groom, he was boarding at Sweetham Hall Lane, Bulmer with John and Ann MESSENT. His mother ( horse hair weaver)was still at Bridge Street, Alpheton with her sister and brother in law and children Frederick (wheelwright), Stanley (apprentice blacksmith, Bertha and Alice Edith, Reginald James[9] and Louise Mary [4] both born Alpheton. All the children have BUGG as surname and Harriett remains single. The records shows that George and Ellen were married 38 years and there were 9 children of the marriage. A slight mystery here since all the children were illegitimate, presumably children of Harriett. |

He enlisted in Peterborough. "Soldiers Died" has him born in Ilford and formerly in the A.S.C. ?
The battalion was reduced to a cadre in the spring of 1918 and essentially replaced the disbanded 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. The war diary for April 1918 has not been found. His death was reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press 26 June 1918
