William SWALLOW was born in Clare (1st qtr 1889 Risbridge 4a:649) son of Harry and Mary Ann SWALLOW (née TURNER). Baptised in Clare on 24th February 1889

1891 census...Aged 2, he was at Trundle's Farm, Clare with his grandfather Charles TURNER [50] stockman born Cowlinge; his grandmother Ellen [46] born Denston; Uncles Robert[13] born Cowlinge, George[7] and Joseph [1] both born Clare; his father Harry SWALLOW [28] ploughman born Clare; mother Mary A SWALLOW [27] born Cowlinge.

1901 census...Aged 12, he was at Chilton Street, Clare with his parents and sister Ellen [8]

1911 census...Aged 22 horseman on farm, he was at Buxton's Farm, Alpheton with his parents; sister Ellen and brother Samuel [9] borm Clare.

After his mother's death, his father moved to Lodge Farm Cottages, Lavenham


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
The battalion war diary:-
30 November 1917. In Reserve in QUARRY. Enemy counter-atttacked. 13 Officers and 219 OR missing. HQ and A Coy surrounded and captured. Enemy broke through Division on the right and attacked battalion in the rear


CWGC has 33 of the battalion killed that day, none has a known grave
