Ernest James WHENT was born on 12th March 1888 in Alpheton (2nd qtr 1888 Sudbury 4a:385, son of Enoch and Sarah WHENT (née SUTTON).Baptised 3rd June 1888 in Alpheton.

1891 census...Aged 3. he was at Bridge Street, Alpheton with his father Enoch WHENT [42] farm labourer; his mother Sarah [41]; brother Albert [19] domestic groom; sisters Gertrude [6]and Lilian [1].All were born in Alpheton

1901 census...Aged 13, he was still in Bridge Street with his parents

1911 census...Aged 23, he was on the HMS Good Hope in Gibraltar, serving in the Royal Marines. He enlisted on 18th February 1907.


He enlisted in Portsmouth in 1907. The battalion records for August 1816 have not been found
