George ANSELL was born in Congly (Clynnog ?), Wales (Carnarvon Q1-1900 11B:414) son of George and Ellen ANSELL (née THOMAS).

1901 census... Aged 1, recorded as born Carnarvon, he was at High Street, Fox End, Balsham with his father George ANSELL [28] groom, born Balsham; his mother Ellen, born Carnarvon, Wales; sisters Emily [4] and Ada [3] both born Ince, Lancashire.

Sister Selina Minnie was born in Balsham on 23rd April 1902, Lovis Vera in Balsham on 25th June 1903 and brother Sidney Philip in Balsham on 24th February 1906. Sister Violet was born 12th July 1909 in Balsham.

1911 census...Aged 11, he was at Nine Chimneys Lane, Balsham with his widowed grandmother Selina ANSELL [61] laundress born Fulbourn; uncle Philip ANSELL [20] farm labourer born Balsham; sister Emily [14] laundry girl. His parents were at Horseshoe Corner, Balsham with his sisters Ada Ellen, Selina Minnie, Lovis Vera and Violet and brother Philip. Of the 8 children, one had died

From the pension card, after his mother died, his father was at 1 Council Houses, Cambridge Road, Balsham


He enlisted in Cambridge while resident in Balsham


The battalion war diary has them in the front line on the L'ÉCLUSE sector. It was exceptionally quiet, little enemy shelling but heavy flooding of the River Sensee made things a bit difficult. They were relieved on 6th by the 7th Canadians.
From 1st to 6th October, out of 17 Officers and 630 other ranks, no officers were casualties, other ranks - killed 1 - gassed 7 - wounded 1
