George Henry Barker was born at Barningham Park, Bardwell (Bury St Edmunds Q4-1911 4A:1726), son of Alfred John and Ellen Thirza BARKER (née COBBOLD). He had two elder brothers, Frederick C [1905] born Rougham and William J [3] born Barningham Park, Bardwell


He married Iris Doreen BAILEY (Newmarket Q3-1939 4A:4634) later of Thetford . In the 1939 register Iris was at 112 East Lodeg, London Road, Mildenhall with her family.

In the 1939 register the family were still at Barningham Park, Bardwell. His father [11-2-1879] was a shepherd on farm; mother [9-2-1878] and brother George H [18-10-1911] a builder's labourer. There are no closed records, possibly the other brothers were already in the Armed Forces.

His battalion were fighting north of Singapore before the surrender of the island to the Japanese. On the 26th a column from the 6th Norfolks attempted to break through to help the 6/15th Brigade who were held up at Sengarang but were wiped out.

The battalion lost 68 killed on 26th January, none have a known grave, all are named on the Singapore Memorial
