Herbert Manning was born in 1876 (2nd qtr 1876 Thetford Union 4b:397) son of Robert and Emily MANNING (née CRACK). His place of birth is varied in records. "Soldiers Died" has Streatham, Norfolk, 1881,1891 and 1901 census have Wretham, Norfolk but 1911 it is Rougham. It does seem to have been actually West Wretham, Norfolk. He was baptised at West Wretham on 5th February 1877

1881 census...Aged 4, he was at Goose Common, Little Ellingham with his father Robert MANNING [43] farm labourer born Herringswell; his mother Emily [42] born Barrow; brother George [16] farm labourer born Barrow, sister Ann [12] born Barrow, brothers Frederick [9] born Barrow, William [6] born Wretham and Thomas [5 months] born Lit Ellingham.

1891 census...Aged 14, farm labourer, he was at 16 Burthorpe, Barrow with his parents, sister Ann and brothers Frederick and William. Father now recorded as born Barrow

He married Laura ADKIN [11-10-1874] in 2nd qtr 1900

1901 census...Aged 25, a farm labourer, he was at Burthorpe with his wife Laura, her sons Bertie C and John W ADKIN, daughter Elise [10 months] all except Herbert born in Barrow

1911 census...Aged 32, he was at Burthorpe, Barrow with his wife Laura; sons Arthur James [7-1-1903], Frank Herbert [8-5-1905], Percy Charles [10-3-1907] and George William [22-4-1908], daughters Elsie [10], Lily [9] and Fanny Laura [18-3-1910]. They had 2 boarders, Bert and John ADKIN, both farm labourers (Laura's sons). All the children ( at this stage 9) were born in Barrow. They went on to have another son, Ernest [29-5-1915].

His legatee was wife Laura. The pension card has their family at Burthorpe, Barrow . Six of their children qualified for pension

His step-son John Adkin was killed in France in 1917 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds

The battalion were at Rancourt on 25th in the front line. The day passed quielty until 8:30 pm when there was heavy shelling which was silenced by a counter barrage.
CWGC records Herbert as the only one killed.
