George Jonathan Woods was born in Barrow (4th qtr 1885 Thingoe 4a:662) son of Jonathan and Hannah Sophia Elizabeth WOODS (née WOODS).Baptised in Barrow on 13th June 1886

1891 census...Aged 5, he was at 9 The Street, Barrow with his grandfather Charles WOODS [63] farm labourer; his grandmother Maria [63] born Ousden; aunt Beatrice [17]; father Jonathan WOODS [28] farm labourer; mother Hannah [30]; sisters Ada [7] and Kate [1]; brother Roland C [3]. All except his mother were born in Barrow.

1901 census...Aged 15, he was a groom at the Black Horse, Newmarket. At the Street, Barrow, were his parents; sisters Ada, Kate and Beat [9]; brothers Roland and Frank [7].

1911 census...He was a gunner in the 48th Heavy Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, Woolwich Barracks. His parents, with brother Roland were in Barrow.



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds
He died of wounds in No.2 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. With no service record it cannot be ascertained where or when exactly he was wounded.
Being in France as early as 17 August 1914 shows he was a Regular, or at least a Reservist. Not having the clasp to his 1914 star could be that he never came within range of enemy guns before 22nd November, or that his relatives did not claim the clasp.
