Harry James Jackson was born on 17th September in Barton (4th qtr 1891 Stow 4a:761) son of Alfred William and Sarah Ann JACKSON (née OSBORNE)

In the census below his parents' ages are inconsistent but it is the same family group.

1901 census...Aged 9, 'James' was at Great Green, Thurston with his father Alfred JACKSON [48] stockman on farm, born Gt Finsborough; his mother Elizabeth [30] brother Alfred [18] Private in Suffolk Regt born Stowmarket. The rest of the siblings, except Oliver, were all born in Barton and were brothers Ernest[14] a carter, George [7] Charles [5] and Oliver Charles [2] born Norton; sisters Ethel [16] and Maude [12].

1911 census...Aged 20, a farm labourer, he was still at Great Green, Thurston, with his parent, father now 51 and mother 47, having borne 11 children. Also there were his brothers George [17] and Frederick (Charles?) [15] both farm labourers, Charles (Oliver) [12] Alberet [10], Sidney [8] and Arthur [6].

He married Elizabeth TUNBRIDGE [20-7-1889] on 25th October 1913 in Beyton Church.


He registered 15th November 1915 and was mobilised on 8th April 1916, in Bury St.Edmunds in the 14th (R) Battalion Royal Sussex Regt. A farm labourer he gave his date of birth, address Beyton Green, next of kin, his wife Elizabeth. He was 5 feet 7.5 inches tall, chest 33 to 36 inches. Posted to 19th Training Regt on 1st September, he was posted to the 1st Royal West Kent and to BEF 14th October 1916, was back in UK (medical reasons) from 22nd May 1917 and was posted to 3rd Battalion on 30th October 1917 Returned to France on 21st January 1918 and posted to 6th Battalion on 23rd January 1918.

He was wounded on 23rd October 1918 and died at No.4 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station at Agnes les Duisans on the 25th
His personal belonging returned to his widow were:- Wallet, letters, Photos, cards, 2 pencils, 5 buttons, scissors, rosary,knife, cig.case, tin containing cigarettes, 2 coins, 2 discs title, badge, cig lighter and purse. His weist watch was not returned.

The battalion war diary has them at Nivelle in France on 23rd October 1918, just over the border from Tournai. They had 3 killed and 6 wounded that day.
