Sydney Montague Melton was born on 10th January 1895 (1st qtr 1895 Stow 4a:810) son of George and Anna MELTON (née BENNETT). Admitted to Beyton School 15th May 1900

1901 census...Aged 5, he was at Thurston Road, Beyton with his father George MELTON [50] painter born Rougham; his mother Anna [45] born Thetford; sisters Kate [15] and Rose [12]; brothers George [11] and Edward [8]. All the children were born in Beyton.

1911 census...Aged 15, he was assisting in the business in Beyton, with his parents; sister Dorothy [6]; brothers Edward and Reginald [9]. His mother had lost 2 of her 12 children.



He enlisted in 22nd battalion, Royal Fusiliers on 14th December 1914. On entering the RAF he was 5 feet 8 inches tall, grey eyes, light brown hair
He was admitted to hospital on 22nd July 1918 and evacuated to UK per HS St.Denis on 3rd August 1918 and discharged on 7th October 1918 with TB to live at Laburnum House, Beyton.
Posted to BEF in 1915, ccording to village history he was wounded in December 1915 and again in May 1917. Transferred to the Balloon Section of the Royal Flying Corps, he was then transferred to the Royal Air Force ( as a cook) on 1st April 1918. Contracting TB he was discharged in October 1918. This concurred with the cause of death on his death certificate, and with the aid of "In from the Cold", Sidney is now on the National Book of Remembrance and recognised by CCWGC.




Sydney Melton is buried in Beyton(All Saints) Graveyard
