Herbert Pallant was born in Ash Bocking 14th May 1879 (2nd qtr 1879 Bosmere 4a:670) son of Harry and Hannah PALLANT (née FINBOW).

1881 census...Aged 1, he was at Ash Bocking with his father Henry PALLANT [27] farm labourer born Debemham; his mother Hannah [23] born Gosbeck; sister Eliza [11 months] born Ash Bocking; widowed grandfather John FINBOW [69] farm labourer born Gosbeck.

His mother died in 1882. Father married Elizabeth WELLBY in 1885.

1891 census...Aged 11, he was at 66 Hansford Road ? Ipswich with his father and stepmpother Elizabeth [28] born Debenham; sister Eliza and brother Benjamoin [9] born Ipswich.

1901 census...Aged 21 he was in the Army in South Africa.It is not known if this was in the Suffolk Regt or the Lancashire Fusiliers. He has not yet been found in the medal rolls

He joined the ipswich Post Office in 1904
He married Helen CUNNINGHAM [10-3-1884] on 3rd June 1906, later of 38 Newton Street, Ipswich. They had one son, Herbert, born 4th August 1907

1911 census...Aged 31, an assistant store manager, he was at 48 Alexander Road, Ipswich with his wife Helen [27] born Diss and their son Herbert [3 months] born Ipswich

He was with Stowmarket Post Office in 1912 and with Bury St.Edmunds Post Office in 1914. Maybe he was postman for Beyton? No documentation has been found actually linking him with Beyton


He enlisted in 1898
The battalion war diary has :-
1st Nov..2 Coys pushed forward on Messines Road in localmsupport of Somerset lightb Infantry.Remainder of Bn in Brigade reserve at PLOEGSTEERT.
2nd Nov..Col Butlet takes over command of section of defence.One company fix trenches at St Yves to support Somersets. Casualties - killed Capt Sneyd and 4 men, 19 OR wounded.
