Harry Sparke was born in Shimpling (2nd qtrm 1893 Sudbury 4a:753) son of Alfred and SPARKE (née UNGLES)
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Brands lane, Lawshall with his father Alfred SPARKE [39] horsekeeper on farm; his mother Ellen[30]; sisters Elsie [11] and Alice [5]; brother John [10]. All ere born in Shimpling. 1911 census...Aged 17 a farm labourer, he was at New Barn, Cockfield with his parents; brothers John (farm labourer), William [9] born Lawshall, Fred [6] born Lawshall;sisters Alice, Beatrice [7] born Lawshall and Vera [1] born Alpheton; nephew Charlie [9 months} born Cockfield (parentage not known but appears to be son of Elsie) The actual Bradfield Combust connection has not been found, except the memoriam notice in the Bury Free Press His sister Alice married William SAVOY and was the mother of the brothers (Gerald and Derrick SAVOY) killed in WW2 see here |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Despite arriving in France on 11th November 1914 Harry has no clasp to his 1914 Star. This is probbly due to his relatives not putting in a claim for it
The battalion was in the Vierstraat area for March. Nothing of great significance happened. In fact the war diary besides namimg some casualties actually states "Usual routine", but the usual shelling and sniper fire accounted for 140 csualties.
