George James Raynham was born in Bradfield St George (3rd qtr 1881 Thingoe 4a:570) son of John Andrew and Priscilla RAYNHAM (née GRIMWOOD)
1891 census...Aged 9, he was at 1 Maypole Green, Bradfield St George with his father John RAYNHAM [48]carpenter; his mother Priscilla [49] born Hitcham; sisters Angelina [25], Miriam [19], Frances B [7] and Elsie E [5]; brothers Leonard [23] (wheelwright), John A [15], William J [13], Ernest H [14] and Samuel [12]. All except his mother were born in Bradfield St George 1901 census...Aged 19, a carpenter, he was still at Maypole green with his parents; sister Frances (maid and DElsie (teacher); brother Samuel (wheelwright).) 1911 census...Aged 29, the only child still at home, in Bradfield St George, with his parents. His mother had lost 1 of her 14 children. He married Helena Elizabeth FAIRHEAD,in July 1915, of Pear Tree farm Shotley, on 12th August 1915, later of High Street, Orford. Their daughter Mary Priscilla was born on 21st December 1917 ( in Woodbridge). The daughter is not on the pension card. His widow Alice was first at Rattenden Lane, Marden, Kent and then at 57 Chuch Street, Orford nr Woodbridge. |

He enlisted in Chatham on 29th January 1915, having passed his medical in Bury St.Edmunds earlier, giving his age as 33 years 6 months, single, a carpenter,
born Bradfield St George. He was 5 feet 0.5 inches tall, weighed 154 lbs, chest 36 to 39 inches On discharge he was noted as having some breathing problems and a shrapnel wound to the side. He served at home from 10-1-1915 to 25-9-1915, BEF France 36-9-1915 to 12-1-1917, home 13-1-1917 to 31-3-1918, back to France 1-4-1918 to 6-9-1918, home 7-9-1018 to death on 7-11-1919. He was wounded i leg and shell shock on 18th may 1916 and was wounded again om 23rg August 1918. After his death his sister Miss M Rynham had informed the authorities, erronueously, that he had died at Dairy House Marden Kent, address of his brother James. He actually died in the General Hospital, Maidstone, Kent from pneumonia, following an operation for a diaphragmitic hernia. His widow's address was 1 Gordon Villas, St Johns Hill, Woodbridge Army Form 5080 shows no living parent and 12 living full blood siblings
