Born in 1890 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:716) son of Edward and Mary Ann RANSOME (née COE)
1891 census...Aged 7 months (as Thomas), he was at 19 Nowton Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Edward RANSOME [43] farm labourer born Hawstead; his mother Mary Ann [28] born Nowton; sisters Kate [9], Julia [6] and Alice [2]; brothers William [8] and Frederick [4]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds. 1901 census...Aged 11 (Thomas) he was at Out Westgate, 7 Albert's Row with his parents; sisters Julia, Alice and Annie [9]; brothers Frederick (farm labourer), John [5] and Arthur [2]. 1911 census...Aged 21, he was a private in the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment in St.Georges. Bermuda. At 28 Church Walk, Bury St.Edmunds were his parents; sister Annie; brothers Arthur and Harry[9]. All 10 of his mother's children survive. His brother Arthur Edward RANSOME 6454931 (Saddler) Royal Fusiliers died of disease in 1922. Not recorded by CWGC as this was after the permitted date (31st August 1921). He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He was certainly in France early enough for the clasp to his 1914 Star, so it seems his relatives never claimed it. Dying of wounds at a Base Hospital and no service record available it is impossible to say when or where he was wounded. The battalion were involved in heavy shelling and gas on 8th May near Vierstraat.
