1891 census...Aged 2 months, he was at 23 Prospect Row, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles J RAYNER [24] auctioneer's assistant; his mother Alice K [29]; brother Herbert [5]; sisters Eva A [3] and Winifred A [2]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds. 1901 census...Aged 10, he was still at 23 Prospect Row with his mother, sisters Eva, Winifred and Ethel [8]. Hismother is now recorded as born in Barrow. His father was lodging at the Swan Hotel, East Harling. His father died in 1908 1911 census...He has not been found in this census. His widowed mother, widowed grandmother Sarah FROST; sisters Winifred and Ethel and brother Herbert were at 23/24 Prospect Row, Bury St.Edmunds. On the pension card his mother was at 24 Auction Mart and later at 11 West Road, Bury St.Edmunds. |

He attested in Canterbury, Kent on 11 January 1916, mobilised in The Buffs on 29th February 1916. He gave his age as 25 years 1 month, a hairdresser of Swingate Downs Flying Corps, Dover.
5 feet 6.5 inches tall, 30.5 to 32.5 inches chest, weighing 119 lbs, next of kin, his mother Alice Kate of 24 Auction Mart, Bury St.Edmunds. Posted to 3rd Buffs 12 March, and 6th Battalion on 9th June when posted to BEF. Appointed Coy Barber 8/10/1916. Admitted to Field Ambulance sick on 22/2/1917, thence to 37 Field Ambulance until discharged to unit 10/3/1917. A re-occurrence sent him to Field Ambulance on 12/4/1917 and then to 1 Canadian General Hospital before evacuation to UK from Etaples on 15/4/1917. After a spell of sickness in UK(16 /4 to 18/7/1917) he returned to Depot 16/4/1917, 3rd Bn 5/6/1917 and 6th Battalion in France on 19/7/1917. Promoted Lance Corporal 6 November 1917 Wounded in action on 20 November 1917, fractured femur, sent to Casualty Clearing Station and thence to 26 General Hospital Etaples (gun shot wound left thigh) and there he died on 26th November 1917 His personal belonging sent to his mother were :-cigarette case, tidy bag, pipe, pencil and paper knife, cap badge, knife, pouch, false teeth, metal watch, wallet, metal mirror, photos and notebook. Army Form 5080,signed by his mother on 22/8/1919 has living relatives, his mother at 24 Auction Mart, Bury St.Edmunds, brother Herbert [33], sisters Eva Annie [32], Winifred Amy [30] and Ethel Maude [26]. No addresses legible for the siblings. No documentation has been found regarding when he was awarded his Military Medal. His battalion were in action at GONNELIEU on 20th November 1917
