on 4th October 1895
His father died in 1899 1901 census...Aged 5, he was 22 College Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his widowed mother Selina REYNOLDS [30] tailoress; grandmother Emma ANDREWS [56]; aunt Hettie [23]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds. 1911 census...Aged 15, a shop assistant, he was at 11 Chalk Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his uncle John WELHAM [35] carpenter born Ipswich; his aunt Henrietta [35]; cousins Gadton [7], Geoffrey [6] and Jack [2] all born Bury St.Edmunds; grandmother Emma ANDREWS. |

He enlisted in Bermondsey, when resident in Gresham Street.
War Diary:- GIVENCHY..22/5/15 12 noon..Disposition as before. Fire confined to immediate front as Canadians reported to have captured front line as far as J1 and uncertain where left flank rests. Heavy shelling of our section during night-morning. Trench on left a great deal damaged. Enemy attacked line on our left about 12 noon but were repulsed, our machine guns firing with effect. Attack renewed again at 2:20 pm and again repulsed with heavy loss. Enemy guns enfilading our trenches all day - the C.R.A. informed but without result Company Commanders of 23rd and 24th battalion proceeded round trenches to reconnoitre prior to attack. Two Capts of 2rd injured by explosion of shell. 3:30 pm Ge, Willoughby and Brig Maj in consultation with CO, Adjutant and Officers of 23rd and 24th. 4:pm Situation still strained, all ranks standing to. Considerable movement along German line, men in full kit reinforcing across the open by J7. Bombardment has slackened but rifle fire continues heavy. Our trenches again much damaged. Casualties - six killed seven wounded and two incapacitated by shock (all Other Ranks). 7 pm thirty NCO and men of reserve company under RE repairing SCOTTISH TRENCH parapets and parados....two thousand sand bags and 500 bombs, 24 pole discs and 30 scaling ladders received at WINDY CORNER.
