Born on 28th April 1887 at 37 Bishops Road, Bury St.Edmunds (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4c:734) son of Frederick James and Louisa ALLEN (née PREWER ). Baptised at St John's on 10th July 1887.
1891 census...Aged 3, he was at 1 St.Edmunds Place with his father Freerick James ALLEN [33] cellarman/wine merchant born Norwich; his mother Louisa [32] dressmaker; sisters Agnes Louisa [11], Hilda Emmaline [9] and Violet Grace [7]; brother Edmund Henry [1]. All except his father were born in Bury St Edmunds. 1901 census...Aged 13, agrocer's porter, he was still at 1 St.Edmunds Place with his parents, father now a painter; sisters Hilda [19] a dressmaker, Grace [17] and Ivy [2]; brothers Edmund, William [6] and Ernest [2]. His Army number indicates enlistment in the Suffolks in 1905. His mother died in 1909 1911 census...Aged 24, seems to be a Private in the 1st Battlion, Suffolk Regiment in Egypt. He married Bessie BEER [26-6-1890] in 1913 in Chelsea. Their son, George Frederick was born on 27-8-1913 in Woolwich The pension card has his widow re-married to Thomas W NORMAN (in 1917), and lived at 38 Balgowan Street, Plumstead. |

On the 9th the battalion left Wellinton caves in ARRAS and made a successful attack. They then spent the 10th in the captured German trenches. On the 11th they attacked GUEMAPPE, but were unsuccessful. They lost 1 officer killed and 5 wounded, 12 ORs killed, 87 wounded and 19 missing The Bury Free Press on 6th May 1917 reported the death on 11th April of Sereant F.R.Allen, 2nd Suffolks, eldest son of the late F.J.Allen of Bury, aged 29. On the right hand flint wall at the end of Myrtle Mews off St. Martins Street (adjacent to St. Edmunds Place) there is a carved wooden shrine for the men of St Edmunds Place, Bury St.Edmunds. Named on it are Frederick R.Allen - Frank Ashton - William Ashton - William Barton - Fred Brunning - James P Cook - Edward C Creek - William E Nunn - James H Pallant - Victor Southgate.
