Born in Nowton in 1895 (Qtr 2 Thingoe 4a:784), son of John and Emily AUSTIN (née KNOCK ). Baptised in Nowton, St Peter on 16th June 1895

1901 census...Aged 6, He was at the Old Pit Sail Mill, Nowton Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father John [41 born Bradfield St.George; his mother Emily [39] born Great Welnetham; brothers Walter[14] domestic gardener, born Burton on Trent, Edward [13] born Nowton, Thomas [2] born Nowton and Charles [4 months] born Bury St.Edmunds sisters Mildred [8] and Mabel [3] both born in Nowton

1911 census...Aged 16, hand at Mineral Waters Co, he was at Stonebridge Farm, Bury St Edmunds with his parents, father now farm horseman, sisters Bertha [26] born Hessett, a dairy worker, and Mabel [13]; brothers Walter [24] a miller, Thomas [12], Charlie [10], Frederick [8] and Harry [2], the ast 2 born in Bury St.Edmunds.Hs mother had lost one of her 12 children.

The pension card has his mother at Vinefields Cottage, Bury St.Edmunds. CWGC have his parents at 9 Hollow Road, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds in the Suffolks Territorial Force (5th Bn) on 7th September 1914. His address was Vinefields Farm, Eastgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds, 20 years 5 months old, 5 feet 7 inches tall, chest 34.5 inches. On 10th August 1915 he was in the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in Gallipoli. Evacuated to UK on 26th January 1916, he was medically discharged on 2th February 1916 and admitted to pension on 30th March 1916. His TB was judged not to have been contracted in the Army, but aggravated by his service and he was discharged in February 1916. He died at home at 9 Hollow road, Bury St.Edmunds

After the withdrawal from Gallipoli the 5th Suffolks served in Palestine and Egypt.


There is unfinished business with CWGC who have his date of death wrongly as 1919
this is a typo in their records, but it means the date on his headstone and their printed records are wrong. They have been notified
