Born in 1897 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:828) son of Charles Reader Pither and Marion Louise Maud BAILEY (née BURRELL)

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 66 Southgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles Reader Pither BAILEY [24] house painter, born Wandsworth and his mother Marion Louise Maud [24] bron Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 13, he was at 48 Crown Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents, father now a plumber.

The pension card has his father at 16 Cullum Road, Bury St.Edmunds. On his father's death, his mother moved to 17 Carisbrooke Road, Brighton.

Victor's trade at his death was painter/glazier


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 16th November 1914, giving his address as 48 Crown Street, Bury St.Ednmunds, an engineer's mate. Aged 17 years 3 months, 5 feet 10 inches tall, chest 30.5 to 33 inches, wearing glasses. He was embodied in the 2nd/5th Battalon, Suffolk Regiment. This battalion was sued to supply drafts for the active service units and the permanent staff tended to be regulars with experience, but the clerical staff were usally whose who were not medically fit for war service.

Discharged on 21st January 1916 as medically unfit for further war service, intended address 48 Crown Street, Bury St.Edmunds. His dischsrge papers do not attribute his illness (tuberculosis) to, or aggravated by, military service hence he is not on the CWGC records or "Soldiers Died".

His death, after discharge, was from tuberculosis.
