Walter Sapey BARNARD was born on 17th December 1879 in Bury St Edmunds (1st qtr 1888 4a:610) son of Charles George and Sarah BARNARD (née HUNT). Baptised at St.Mary's Bury St.Edmunds on 28th March 1880

1881 census...Aged 1, he was at Lodge Gate, 32St Andrews Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Charles BARNARD [25] coachman born Harling; his mother Sarah [25 born Saxham; brother Charles [3] born Bury St.Edmunds.

1891 census...Aged 11 he was at 96a Risbygate Street (yard) Bury St.Edmunds wih his parents; brothers Charles [13], Ernest George [7] and Cecil Thomas [9 months]; sisers Florence Mary [9], Mabel Mara [6] and Kate Violet [3] All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1901 census...Not found in this census, presumably in the Army, possibly in South Africa. His parents were still at 96a Risbygate Street, with his sisters Mable, Kate, Priscilla E [8] and Ethel M [5]; brothers Ceceil T and Albert E [5 months]

1911 census...Aged 32, a labourer, he was back home at 98 Risbygate Street with his parents, brothers Cecil a butcher's assistant and Edward [10]; sisters Mabel, Priscilla, Ethel (dressmaker) and Kate (nw Mrs Mills) with her daughter Katherine [3] born in Woolwich.

The pension card has his mother at Risbygate Street still


He attested in Bury St.Edmunds on 8th September 1914 and was embodied in 7th Northamptonshire on 18th January 1915 at Southwick. He gave his adderess as 98 Risbygate Street, Bury St.Edmunds, occupation, labourer, aged 35. He had previously served 7 years in the 1st Bn.Northamptonshire Regt. He was single.
