Frederick Arthur BARTON was born in 1894 (3 qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:748) son of Arthur Frederick and Lavinia BARTON (née BYE )

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 55 Out Westgate, Bury St.Edmunds, with his father Arthur BARTON [7] Printer compositor ; his mother Lavinia [39] dressmaker, born Dullingham; sisters Florence [13] born Dulligham Ley, Dorothy [11] and Ella [3]; brother Walter [1].The four youngest all born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 16, clerk for seed merchant, he was still at 55 Westgate with his parents, sister Ella and brother Walter

He married Alice Maud Mary FLACK [26-6-1896] on 16th May 1915 in St.Mary's, Bury St.Edmunds. Their son, Frederick Walter, was born on September 1st 1915. His widow re-married to William CHAPMAN in BSE in 1919.

The pension card has his widow's address as 4 Atheneum Lane, Bury St.Edmunds .

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds on 29th November 1915, giving his age as 23 years 3 months, address 4 Atheneum Lane, Bury St.Edmunds, a clerk. He was 5 feet 8.25 inches tall, chest 32 inches to 34 inches, weighing 114 lbs
Placed in Reserves and embodied on 24th May 1916, embarked for BEF on 1st September 1916, posted to 22nd Royal Fusiliers on 2-9-1916 and transferred to 11th Royal West Kents on 13th September 1916

War Diary:-
Battalion strength :- Officers 41, Other ranks 737
Battalion attacked the German trenches, on the right the 15th Hampshire Regt.on the left the 140th Infantry Brigade, on a two company front.(Inf Bde Order No.55 attached). The battalion was only able to advance 100/150 yards from our front line, being held up by intense machine gun fire from both flanks and direct front. Heavy casualties were incurred in this advance. The following officers became casualties. Killed:- Lieut. Purever, 2nd Lieuts, Prior, Gibobn and Watson. Died of wounds - Lieut. Lacey MC, wounded:- Capts Clarke-Richardson, Stone, Simmonds, Lieuts Fraser 2nd Lieut Cookson, Edmunds, Argent, Morley and Radclyffe. Missing Lieut Heath. Casualties in other ranks 323.. The support battalions having lost direction failed to arrive, support was asked for and 2 Coys 12th East Surreys came up at about 6 pm. The Battalion had in the meantime dug in. During the night with the assistance of the 12th East Surrey Regt the position held was consolidated and a communications trench dug back to the original front line.
8th:- Battalion relieved in front line by 23rd Middlesex Regt and the 10th Royal West Kents.
