Born in 1894 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:724) son of Richard Charles and Mary BASS (née FARRANTS)

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 60 St.John's Street, Bury St Edmnds with his father Richard Charles BASS [35],printer; his mother Mary [39]; brothers Ernest [13] errand boy, Cyril Albert [12] and Harold Frederick [1] sisters Agnes Mary [5] and Victoria [3]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 16, a grocer, he was at 6 Athenaeum Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Ernest, carpenter, Cyril, baker and Harold; sisters Agnes Mary and Victoria. His mother had lost one f her 7 children.

The pension card has his father still at 6 Athenaeum Lane.


He enlisted in Colchester.
War Diary :-
EAUOURT L'ABBE, in FLERS LINE Attack on the WARLENCOURT LINE by 104th Bde at 1:30 pm
Attacknsuccessful.Battalion badly cut up. The remnant of the battalion under Capt.G.G.BATES dig themselves in in an advanced position in the right of the Brigade front astride the EAUCOURT L'ABBE - LE BARQUE road. Casualties:-
Officers killed 1; wounded 4; missing 1
O.R.s killed 22; wounded 257; missing 55 approx.
