Born in 1888 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:727) son of Alfred and Eliza (née PREWER )

1891 census...Aged 3, he was at 68 Raingate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Alfred BAXTER [46]beerhouse keeper "Globe"; his mother Eliza [44] born Littleport; sisters Kate [16] dressmaker and Eleanor Laura [14]; brother Alfred Ernest J [10]. All except his mother were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...Aged 13 he was at Sharpes Lane, Horningsheath with his grandfather widower John PREWER [80] well sinker born Chevington; his mother, now recorded as 42, born Horringer; cousin John PREWER [17] well sinker born Horringer

1911 census...Aged 23, He was in Egypt with the 1st battalion Suffolk Regiment (ex labourer).

He married Ada Eleanor CLAYDON [29-7-1889] in October 1916, the pension card has her at 15 Crown Street, Bury St.Edmunds, then 100 Alexandra Road, Southend on Sea, and CWGC have later of Pennyhouse Farm Cottage, Accrington, Lancs,


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The pension card records he died of neglect whilst a prsoner of war.

The war diary for the time he was captured simply records 21st to 25th March in action continously, understandable since the start of the German Spring Offensive on 21st, the Kaiserschlacht was streaming forward over-running all in their path. The battalion at the start of 23rd were between St Leger and the Mory-Ecoust road, not even dug, three companies were virtually wiped out, either killed or captured, mostly captured.

as a result of lung infection
Another entry clarifies this and gives his burial place as Evengelical Cemetery in Castrop grave 140
Other International Red Cross records show he was captured on 22nd March 1918 at Ecoust, unwounded, by 2nd Munsters, he gave his d.o.b as 28th March 1888 in Bury and address 53 Guildhall Street, Bury St.Edmunds Suffolk
