Born in 2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:802, son of Lionel Frank and Charlotte Helen BEST (née DEEKS)

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 21 Fornham Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Lionel BEST [35] gas rate collector; his mother Charlotte [25]; sisters Dorothy M [7] and Margaret E [5]; brother Jack [1]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 13, he was at 21 Hatter Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents (father now gas meter inspector); sisters Dorothy May and Margaret Edith (both draper's assistants; brothers Jack and George Herbert [8].

Married Lydia Mercy Johnston in 1925 in Rydale, Yorks, later of Chudleigh, Devon

In the Great War he was in the 5th Suffolks, 240324 Corporal and was sent to the Balkans in August 1915. He enlisted for WW2 initially in the R.A.O.C.

There are two conflicting details, the Bury Free Press report has him dying in an accident in Normandy and also killed in action. CWGC have his wife as Lydia Mercy of Chudleigh, Deven and the Bury Free Press has her as Bertha, of 80 King's Road, Bury St.Edmunds. In the 1939 Register Lydia Mercy BEST is with her parents at Bellamarsh Farm, Kingsteignton, Newton Abbot, Devon,
