BIRD, Eric Herbert

No.14249779, Trooper, Eric Herbert BIRD
Aged 21

3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wales' Dragoon Guards), Royal Armoured Corps
Killed in Action on Friday, 10th November 1944

Born in 1923 (4th qtr 1923 Blything 4a:1761) son of James H and Annie E BIRD (née THROWER) of 81 Priors Road, Bury St.Edmunds. In 1939 his father was a private gardener

The 3rd Carabiniers were based in India before the war started and remained in the region until 1947. Equiped with M3 Lee tanks, they took part in the Battle of Imphal

Now amalgamated with the Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons), forming the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys). Cap badges are confusing for Corps such as this as it appears that the regimental cap badges could be worn or the Corps badge. Perhaps someone can put me right]

The final assault into Japanese-held Burma began in early November 1944. The 3rd Carabiniers formed part of the 14th Army under General Sir William Slim and advanced south, receiving their supplies mainly by air.
