Born 1898 (qtr 4 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:823) son of Harry and Annie Maria BISHOP (née SALMON). His father died in 1900.

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 123 Eastgate, Bury St.Edmunds with his widowed mother Anne BISHOP [41] born Edwardstone; his brothers Cecil [16], Harold [14] bookseller's errand boy, Reginald H [4] and Harry S [1]; sisters Ethel [12], Violet [9] and Christabel M [6]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 12, he was at 6 Bridewell Lane Bury St.edmunds with his mother; sisters Beatric [27] and Cristabel; brothers Cecil (stableman), Harold (carter), Reginald (shop boy) and Harry. Also Blanche BISHOP [9] born ?, recorded as daughter but no indication of actual parent (registration not identfied).

The pension card has his mother at 6 Bridewell Lane, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.

The German Spring Offensive (Kaiserschlacht) started on 21st March and swept all before it, hence war diaries are genarally very vague if completed. The 2nd Suffolk had 14 officer casualties and 414 OR between 21st and 29th March 1918, mostly posted as missing.
