Born in 1905 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:944) son of Herbert and Nellie BLAKE (née COCKSEDGE). Husband of Mabel Kathleen BLAKE (née ). Unable to find marriage but as Robert was a regular soldier, he may have married abroad.

1911 census...Aged 6, he was at 38 Tayfen Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Herbert BLAKE [30] fitter on farm, born Beyton and his mother Nellie [30] born Sicklesmere.

His parents were at 7 Out Southgate, Bury St.Edmunds in 1939, his father an agricultural engineer, mother a shop keeper.


8 of the 25 men of the 1st Suffolk to die that day are buried in Zuidschote, not far NNW from Ypres, presumably a rear guard action as the BEF retreated to Dunkirk.
