Born in 1886 (2nd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:16) son of Ivan and Harriett BOUGHTON (née BULL)

1891 census...Aged 4, he was at 24/25 St John's Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Ivan BOUGHTON [41] dealer born Ashfield; his mother Harriett [41] butcheress; brothers Thomas[19] butcher, Charles [17]fishmonger/dealer and Ivan [15] milkman/dealer; sister Hannah [12]. All ecept his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...Aged 14, he was still at 24/25 StJohn's Street with his parents.

He married Eveline Eliza BALDWIN (26.6.1887) at All Saints, Walton le Soken, Essex on 19th August 1907.

1911 census...Aged 24, a publican, he was at 3 St.John's Street with his wife Eveline [32]and daughter Vera Agnes [1]. All Bury St.Edmunds born.Eveling had lost one of her 2 children (Ena Gladys b.1908 d.1908)

The pension card has his widow re married (Archibald A.CROSS m 1919) living at 6 College Street, Bury St.Edmunds with daughters Vera Agnes [30-5-1909] and Eveline Grace [18-7-1914].There had been a son, Eric Stanley (b.1916 d.1918)



He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. When reportedmissing his mother made enquiries of the Internatonal Red Cross and their reply on 29th October 1918 was "Nothing Known". The puzzle is that he was initially buried in the German section of the cemetery on Gondecourt, suggesting his body was found by the Germans or he was captured and died later. It could be that the German records in ths instance were not available.

The 2nd/5th Lancashire Fusiliers were in the Givenchy - Houchin area of France at the time. The war diary has:-
Quiet day.6 patrols out on battalion front. Battalion relieved by 1/4th K.O.R.Lanc R taking over their dispositions as Support Battalion.
Casualties 1 O.R. wounded, 1 O.R. missing, Reinforcements nil
