BRINKLEY, Alfred Walter

No.G/22298, Private, Alfred Walter BRINKLEY
Aged 25

7th Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment)
Died of Illness on Sunday, 23rd December 1917

Walter Alfred BRINKLEY was born on 6th July 1892 in Norton (3rd qtr Stow 4a:859) son of William and Ellen BRINKLEY (née CORNISH)

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at Upper Stanton Street, Norton with his father William BRINKLEY [30] beerhouse keeper; mother Ellen [29] and sister Daisy [6] all recorded as born in Norton

1911 census...Walter,aged 18, a hawker, he was at Ixworth Road, Norton with his widowed grandfather Alfred CORNISH [72 carrier/general dealer; uncle Arthur CORNISH [45] helping father; his father William BRINKLEY [40] hawker; his mother Ellen BRINKLEY [39] and his sister Daisy BRINKLEY [16]. All were born in Norton. In fact Daisy was Carrie Daisy Ellen BRINKLEY, born Walsham le Willows 1894 35e qtr 4a:756

His aunt Ellen Louise Brinkley married George Esau Houghton (3rd qtr 1891) of 9 Short Brackland, Bury St.Edmunds. It seems likely it was she who put his name forward for the roll of hnoour

Alfred Walter or Walter Alfred, there is scope for confusion here with other Norton families, but the link via his aunt Ellen seems to confirm the above is the right man. She is incorrectly recorded as "mother" on the pension card.

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds and died in No.4 Casualty Clearing Station, at Dozinghem, Belgium.
With no Army service record found and his dying of illness, there is no way of saying exactly where or when he was taken ill, or even what he died from.
