Born in 1874 (qtr 2 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:546) son of James and Sarah J BURTON (née RIPTON)

1881 census...Aged 6, he was at 53 Cemetery Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father James BURTON [31] labourer; his mother Sarah J [29] born Ireland; Margaret A [9] brothers George W [4] and Charles [2]. All except his mother were born in Bury St.Edmunds,

1891 census...Aged 16, not found in this census, he was in the Army. At 31 Cemetery Road were his parents (father a blacksmith); sister Margaret (charwoman); brothers George W [14] milkboy, Charles Victor, Thomas [9], James R [8], twins William [2] and Arthur [2]; sister Frances [5] (actually brother Francis). Now all regsitered as Bury St.Edmunds born.

1901 census...Aged 26, not found in this census, he was in the Army. At 60 Guildhall Street, Bury St.Edmunds were his parents(father now engineer fitter mother back to being born in Ireland; sister Margaret[28] domestic cook; brothers George [24] printer, Charles [22] engineering fitter, Thomas [19] moulder in foundary, Francis [15] engineering turner, twins William and Arthur [12]; sisters Dora [9] and Edith [7].

On 17th June 1905, as a Colour Sergeant in 2nd Bn, Suffolk Regt, at St.Marey's Tottenham, he married Elizabeth BOULTWOOD [28]. She died in January 1907, he then married her sister, Martha in April 1908!

1911 census...Aged 37, Sergeant Major in 2nd Bn, Suffolks at Stanhope Lines, Barossa Barracks, Aldershot. His wife Martha [36] born Dalston and daughter Lily [2] born Parkstone, Isle of Wight, were with him

Martha is on one pension card as living at 37 Erith Road, Prittlewell.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 19th October 1889, reaching the rank of Warrant Officer on 2nd July 1908. In 1914 he was mentioned in Despatches and in 1915 he was awarded the new Military Cross, one of 27 warrant officers gazetted for the MC on January 1st 1915, for distinguished and meritorious services. He also held the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal
