Born 1893 in qtr 1 Bury St.Edmunds son of James William and Emma BUTTON (née RATCLIFFE)

1901 census...Aged 8, he was at 51 Tollgate Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his father James W BUTTON [38] a journeyman carpenter born Bricett, Suffolk; his mother Emma [28] born Elmswell.

1911 census...Aged 18, a labourer, he was still at 51 Tollgte Lane with his parents (father now recorded as born Semer, Suffolk and his mother in Elmsett; brother Victor [5] born Bury St.Edmunds

He was, before enlistement, a Great Eastern Railway goods porter (Diss Department). His pension card gives the cause of death as pulmonary tuberculosis.


He enlisted on 4th September 1914 in Norwich giving his date of birth as 22-2-1893 in Bury St.Edmunds, a railway porter.Next of kin father James Button. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighed 120 lbs chest 30.5 to 32.5 inches brown eyes, brown hair, Church of England.

He contracted TB in Rangoon in June 1917. His final examination was at Bermondsey Military Hospital on 12th June 1918. Initially he was posted to the Suffolk Regiment, then transferred on 10th September 1914 to the 8th East Surrey Regiment. On 14th Jan 1916 transferred to 10th East Surrey, then on 1st September 1916 transferred to the Training Reserve, and on 27th Dec 1916 transferred again, to the Garrison Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. 6th May 1917 saw him transferred to the 3rd Bedfordshires (#31544) and then on 2nd Dec 1917 posted to England and on 10th May 1918 transferred to the 1st Reserve Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, finally being discharged from the Suffolk on 3rd July 1918 as no longer physically fit for war service. He had served at home from 4/9/1914 to 26/7/1915, in the BEF from 27/7/1915 to 21/11/1915. Then at home from 22/11/1915 to 8/2/1917, then in India until 3/11/1917. On ship to Uk 4/11/1917 to 10/5/1918. home 11 May 1918 until discharge. Intended place of residence 51 Tollgate Lane, Bury St.Edmunds.




Sidney Button is buried in Bury St.Edmunds Cemetery 33A:16

He is not on CWG so as we have his discharge records, if the death certificate has TB, then with the assistance of "In from the Cold" we can have him added to the Book of Remembrance
