Born Frederic John CHAPMAN in 1894 in Gt Welnetham (2nd qtr Thingoe 4a:732) son of Robert and Eleanor Priscilla CHAPMAN (née THURMOTT) "Soldiers Died " has place of birth as Sicklesmere, but Sicklesmere is divided between Little and Great Welnetham.

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at 73 Southgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Robert CHAPMAN [38] pawnbroker's assistant, born Needham Market; his mother Eleanor [40] born Walsham le Willows; brothers William Frank [8] born Bury St.Edmunds and Robert Ernest [4] born Great Welnetham; sisters Kathleen M [2] born Great Welnetham and Eleanor M [2 months] born Bury St.Edmunds.

His father died on 21st July 1906 in Bury St.Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 16, a blacksmith, he was at Needham Market with his widowed aunt Emma DEARING [77] born Gosbeck and her niece Bessie MULLINER [32] born Crowfield. His mother was at 75 Mill Road, Bury St.edmunds with his brothers William Frank (general assistant house furnishings) and Robert Ernest (apprentice Grocer); sisters Kathleen Muriel and Eleanor Mary.

His mother died in 1914. Pension card gives his sister Miss Kathleen M Chapman of 22 Regent Road, Lowestoft has that he died at his home when on furlough.

He enlisted in Ipswich. He served with the BEF and was wounded in Ypres in 1915. At the time of the leave when he died, his battalion were resting in the Suzanne area.

The family Needham Market connection may explain his burial in Barking. He died of 1) Diabetes Mellitis 2) Coma as a Private 4th Suffolk (blacksmith journeyman) at home with his aunt M.Chapman.
