Born 27th April 1894 in Bury St.Edmunds (3rd qtr 4a:744) son of Samuel and Hannah CLARKE (née ALLUM)
1901 census...Aged 8, He was at The Heath, Hessett with his father Samuel CLARKE [46] engine driver born Stanton; his mother Hannah [39] born Chatham, Kent; brothers Fred [16] and Sidney [14] both farm labourers bron in Stanton; sisters Lily [12] born Stanton, Eva [9] born Little Saxham and Nora [3] born Rougham. Not there were elder siblings Percy S [19] and Olive M [17] 1911 census...Aged 18, a farm labourer, he was still at The Heath, Hessett with his father; sisters Eva, Nora and Pretoria [9] born Bradfield St.George. His mother was visiting the CUTTING family,John and Lily, (daughter and son in law) at 5 Willow Cottages, Mill Road, Bury St.Edmunds Mother was later at 4 Willow Cottages, Mill Road, Bury St.Edmunds. He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
War Diary :- 21st August..Battalion remained in reserve, digging in, but from 2 to 9 pm was in readiness to advance in support of 1/4th Norfolks should advance be undertaken. Water still very scarce. One pint per man available Strength of battalion and Battalion HQ was 12 Officers and 499 other ranks. No offensive is recorded for 21st but CWGC have 53 of the battalion dying that day and only one has a known grave.
