Born on 4th November 1895 at 21 Hospital Road, Bury St.edmunds (4th qtr Bury St Edmunds 4a:766) son of Thomas and Clara Elizabeth COOKE (née HEMPSTEAD). Baptised at St Mary's Bury St.Edmunds on 6th December 1895.

1901 census...Aged 5, He was at 21 Hospital Road, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Thomas [40] road worker born Lawshall; his mother Clara [39] born Stradishall; sisters Clara Elizabeth [13], Anne [9] and Amy [7]; brother John [1]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

His mother died in1909.

1911 census...Aged 15, a billiard marker, he was still at 21 Hospital Road with his widower father (now a carter); sisters Clara Elizabeth and Nellie [5]; brothers John [11], George [9] and Thomas [7].


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. He died in No.34 Casualty Clearing Station, Grove Town, Meaulte. After resting in bivouacs in Bernafay Wood, they moved into trenches on 10th October between Geuedecourt and Lesboeufs, facing Transloy. On the 11th they had 7 killed and 16 wounded.
