Born in Bury St.Edmunds (1st qtr 1881 4a:612) son of Charles and Elizabeth COOKE (née COBBOLD)

1881 census...Aged 2 months, he was at 126 Eastgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his grandfather Simon COOKE [49] a dealer; his grandmother Jane [47]; father Charles [23 labourer; mother Elzabeth [24] laundress; sister Elizabeth Jane [3]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1891 census...Aged 10, he was at 39 Eastgate Street with his parents. Sister Elizabeth Jane was next door at 38 with their grandparents Simon and Jane COOKE

His father died in 1900.

1901 census...Aged 20, a farm labourer, he was at 39 Eastgate Street with his grandparents Simon and Jane COOKE. His widowed mother appears to be at Pelican Court, Eastgate, Bury St.Edmunds. Sister Elizabeth Jane seems to have married Alfred OWELL in 1898.

1911 census...Aged 32, a farm labourer, he was still at 39 Eastgate with his wdower grandfaher Simon and his widowed mother Elizabeth

His mother was later at 36 Eastgate, moving on to 5 Long Row, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
The 7th Suffolks were in the Arras sector and on 28th August 1916 were actually having a quiet day, preparing to be relieved by the 7th Norfolks. Even on a quiet day they had 5 killed.
