Born in 1892 (1st qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:776) son of George James and Anne Maria COPPING (née CLUTTERHAM)

1901 census...Aged 9 he was at 7 Mustow Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Geore J COPPING [34] labourer born Bury St.Edmubds; his mother Annie M [31] born North Stow; brothers Albert James [7] and Robert K [1]; sisters Bearice Violet [5] and Annette Maud [3]. All the children were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 19, a butcher, he was still at 7 Mustow Street with his parents; brother Albert (unemployed farm labourer), Robert K and Percy [6]; sisters Bearice (laudnry maid), Olive [4] and Florence Annie[2]. All 8 of Annie's children survive..


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds at the start of the war.

The battalion was involved in the assault on hills Kavak Tepe and Teke Tepe. The fierce fighting and the heat and lack of water made it a perilous 3 days. Continuous sniper fire took it's toll. In the period to 15th the toll was 186 killed or wounded.
