Born in 1893 in Eriswell (3rd qtr Mildenhall 4a:775) son of Henry Charles and Elizabeth Jane CORNISH (née GARROD)



1901 census...Aged 7, he was at 12 Station Approach, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Henry CORNISH [37] labourer born Woolpit; his mother Jane [4] born Northwold, Norfolk; brothers Arthur Charles [13] born Eriswell, Walter Henry [10] born Eriswell and Victor Edward [3] born Elveden. There was also a sister Elizabeth Jane [1885] born Weeting

His father died in 1909

1911 census...Aged 17 a labourer at saw mill, he was still at 12 Station Approach with his widowed mother, now recorded as Elizabeth a boarding house keeper; sister Alice [24] born Weeting; brother Victor.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds , his number suggests sometime in 1911.
When war broke out the 2nd Norfolks were in Bombay, but were quickly sent to Mesopotamia, arriving 15th November 1914. No war diary has been found on line and the 2nd Norfolks history in the region is vague until their capture at the siege of Kut in 1916.
William died in Shaibah, from where all the bodies were later moved to Basra

A two volume Roll of Honour listing all casualties buried and commemorated in Iraq has been produced.
These volumes are on display at the Commission's Head Office in Maidenhead and are available for the public to view.
