Short Stirling Mk 3 bomber, EE913 c/s EX-F of 199 Squadron, piloted by P/Off Thomas Odgers (RAAF), took off from RAF Lakenheath on a mission to bomb Nuremberg
on 28th August 1943. Using H2S to navigate to the target, the H2S was checked on the way by 27 Pathfinder aircraft dropping 1,000lb bombs on Heilbronn. Nuremburg was cloud free and initially pathfinder markers were accurate, but creep back occurred and most bombs fell harmlessly in open country SSW of the city. EX-F was intercepted by Oblt Albert WALTER of 1/NJG6 near Geiselwind and crashed in flames at Futtersee, killing all the crew.
