Born in Ashley (4th qtr 1899 Newmarket 3b:494) son of Albert and Alice (née HURRELL)

1901 census...Aged 1, he was at 40 Out Westgate, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Albert DAY [30] farm labourer born Lidgate; his mother Alice [28] born Wickhambrook; brother Harry [3] born Wickhambrook and sister Daisy [3 months] born Bury St.Edmunds.

1911 census...Aged 11, he was still at 40 Out Westgate with his parents (father now brewery drayman); brother Harry; sisters Daisy, Florence [8 and Alice [5]


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. The battalion were in the vicinity of TILLOY, and quiet, being relieved by the London Scottish on the 8th. The war diary may have lttie going on but 9 men were killed that day in the 4th Battalion.
