Born in Bury St Edmunds (1st qtr 1880 Bury St.Edmunds 4a:614) son of Walter and Jane Elizabeth "Jenny" DEWELL (née GOOCH)

1881 census...Aged 1, he was at 4 Durrant's Cottages, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Walter DEWELL [26] platelayer; his mother Jane [25] tailoress; brother Willie [4]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1891 census...Aged 11, he was at 13 Chapel Lane,Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; brothers Willie [14], Herbert [9], Walter A [6] Ernest [4] and Robert [2]. All born in Bury St.Edmunds

1901 census...Aged 20 he was with the 3rd battalion, Suffolk Regiment at Fort George, in St.Peter Port, Guernsey.

His brother Frederick was killed in 1917 in France, see here


A labourer, he enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds on 23rd April 1900 and died of pneumonia at Elandsfontein.



His Queen's South Africa medal has clasps for Orange Free State - Transvaal - South Africa 1901 - South Africa 1902
