Born on 5th June 1870 in Bury St.Edmunds (2nd qtr 4a:522) son of Samuel and Emma Elizabeth DOWSE (née DUNN)

1871 census...Aged 9 months, he was at 109 Eastate Street, Bury St.edmunds with his father Samuel DOWSE [20] shoemaker and his mother Emma [20]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1881 census...Aged 10, he was at 2 Crane Court, Eastgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his widowed grandmother Sarah DOWSE [79] retired charwoman born Shoreditch.

1891 census...Aged 20, a railway carriage examinere, he was boarding at 98 Devons Road, Bromley

1901 census...Aged 30, not found in this census

Married Mary Partridge SHARMAN [13/6/1867] in Fulham in 1st qtr 1902. Their childre were Samuel Henry [19/6/1902], Alfred William Edmund [4/3/1905] and Richard James Partridge [28/8/1906]. Samuel junior was an invalid.

1911 census...Aged 40, unemployed engineer, he was at 41 Chaucer Road, Acton with his wife Mary and sons Alfred William [6] and Richard James [4]. The boys born in Middlesex. Son Samuel Henry junr was at RSU Cripples Holiday Home, Ragged School Union, Southchurch Beach, Southend On Sea.

Initially his widow was at 15 Goodwin Road, Shepherds Bush, moving to 6 Avenue Road, Goldhawk Road, Hammersmith


He enlisted in Hammersmith, when resident in Shepherds Bush.
With no service record found and his dying in UK from his wounds, there is no way of recording where and when he was wounded
He died in the Military Hospital, Bournemouth.
