Born in 1874 in Bury St.Edmunds (3rd qtr 4a:534) son of Walter and Mary Ann DRANE (née LOMAX).

His father was found in the 1871 census at 6 Finsbury Sqaure, Bridewell Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his wife Mary Ann, daughter Rebecca[1] and son Harry [2 months] but not found since. Harry was next on Isle of Wight with his uncle James Drane in 1881

1881 census...Aged 6, he was at 149 Short Backland, Bury St.Edmunds with his mother Mary Ann DRANE [31] greengrocer; sisters Rebecca [12] and Ada [8]; brother Bertie [5]

1891 census...Aged 16, a basket maker, he was at 2 Stag Yard, St Andrews Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his mother Mary A [41] tailoress; sisters Ada [19] machinist; brother Bertie [15] bricklayer's labourer; cousin Agnes L DRANE [6]. All were born in Bury St.Edmunds,

1901 census...Aged 25, a farm labourer, he was at 29 Church Walk with his widowed mother Mary; cousin Harry LOMAX [15] farm labourer

1911 census...Aged 35, a farm labourer he was at 31 Church Walk, Bury St.Edmunds with Alice CHINERY [44] born Bury St.Edmunds.

Sister Ada (Mrs BROUGHTON) of 60 Springfield Road, Bury St.Edmunds was his sole legatee. The pension card has Mrs Alice Chinnery of 5 Westgate Place, Bury St.Edmunds as unmarried wife.


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
At the end of September the 8th Suffolks were involved in the fighting for Thiepval and the Schwaben Redoubt. After successes on the 26th/27th (The Schwaben and Zollern trenches were taken on the 27th), but they were checked at Medway and Schwaben Redoubt. The attack was renewed at 13:00 on the 28th. "B" and "C" companies took part, leaving the other companies to hold Zollern Trench. Bulgar Trench was quickly taken but Schwaben proved more difficult, but by 14:30 both objectives were gained. Casualties were over 200 though, 16 of whom died that day (11 having no known grave).
