He enlisted in Culford. The Suffolk Yoemanry to their horror had to leave their horses behind when they sailed for Gallipoli in 1915 and when they moved to Palestine, they became, in 191, the 15th Suffolks (still no horses).
Om 6th November 1917 they attacked a series of redoubts covering Sheria, starting at 3am. Before daylight they had 2 officers killed and "B" had all it's officers as casualties. Under cover of a ridge they re-organised, "D" Coy in Reserve was brought up into the line and "A" and "C" Coy moved to the east of Wadi Union..Supported by a section from the Machine Gun Corps, the attack was quickly resumed and the enemy driven from all objectives. They received orders to advance no further. They had taken a large number of prisoners and a battery of guns. A Turkish counter-attack to recover the guns was beaten off. This action had turned the enemy flank but at the cost of 20 killed, all buried now in Beersheba.
