1901 census...Aged 4, he was at 69 Mill Lane, Bury St.Edmunds with his father James Charles EARL [38] carenter;his mother Mina [39] born Burston, Norfolk; brothers JohnThomas [13], Reginald J [11], and Frank G [9]. All except his mother born in Bury St.Edmunds 1911 census...Aged 14, apprentice in hardware, he was at 128 Cemetery Road, Bury St Edmunds with his parents, (father now builder's foreman); brother Reginald an elementary school teacher. The family were later at 128 King's Road, Bury St.Edmunds. |

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. In the HINGES sector, war diary has 14th 11:45 pm..Zero hour. Barrage came down and advance commenced. 15th 12:50 am..Wounded from Y and Z report all well. Prisoners from 3st R.I.R. commence to come through. 2:30 am 2/Lt Bailey, Intelligence Officer reports the enemy still hold some trenches between Z and W Coys. Otherwise everything all right and in touch on right and left. 6:55am Message received timed 5:47am that W had reached the whole of their objective and was in touch with Z Coy. 8 am All quiet. Very little retaliation throughout. What there was was on the canal bank and round the orchard. 4 pm tp 8 pm Enemy heavily shelled the canal bank, chiefly round PONT HINGES, GREENWOOD LANE and the Orchard. Some 8" used. This contined at intervals throughout the night making it very difficult for carrying parties to get up from behind. Some tea was got up and owing to the water dumped across the canal being full of petrol, water was also wanted and a certain amount was got forward.The need of petrol tins however prevented very much being taken up. Casualties 1 officer killed, 5 wounded, OR 11 killed and 77 wounded.
