Born in 1883 in Bury St.Edmonds (3rd qte 4a:615) son of Joseph and Sarah Watling EDMONDS (née SEXTON)

1891 census...Aged 7, he was at 34 Buttermarket, Bury St.edmunds with his father Joseph EDMONDS [49] boot maker born Hellidon, Northants his mother Sarah Watling [49], sisters Sarah Jane [16] tobacconist's assistant, Harriet Sophia [15] scholar and Florence Anne [9]; brother Joseph William [12] solicitor's clerk.All except his father were born in Bury St.Edmunds.

1901 census...Aged 17, a grocer's apprentice, he was at 19 Brentgovel Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents; sisters Sarah J (tobacconist's assistant, Harriet S (draper's assistant) and Florence A (drapper's assistant).

1911 census...Aged 27, a grocer's assistant, he was at 18 Brentgovel Street with his parents; sisters Sarah Jane, Harriet Sophia and Florence Ann.

He married Ethel Maud SANDERS [18-11-1986] in Baptist Church, Garland Street, Bury St.Edmunds on 30th September 1915, when he was resident at 30 Cring Road, Portfield, Chichester. Their daughter, Vera Ethel, was born on 22nd December 1916. His widow lived at 3 King's Road, Bury St.Edmunds.



He attested at Chichester on December 1915, giving his address as 30 Cring Road, Portfield, Chichester, a married grocer's assistant 33 years old. He was 5 feet 3.5 inches tall, chest 31.5 to 34 inches, weighing 121 lbs, next of kin, his wife Ethel of 45 West Road, Bury St.Edmunds. He was mobilised at Bury St Edmunds on 5th June 1916 in 3rd Northamptonshire Regiment and posted to the BEF 17 Infantry Brigade Depot on 29th September 1916 via Folkestone - Boulogne. Posted to 6th York and Lancaster on 14th October 1916 and re-numbered
Evacuated to UK with dysentery and at Cowley Hospital (3rd Southern General Hospital) from 3rd Jan. to 23rd Feb.1917.
Wounded 19 July 1917, he was pased from 5 Field Ambulance to 15 Casualty Clearing Station and then 2 Stationary Hospital Abbeville and he was evacuated to UK via "HMHS St.David". Admitted to Frensham Military Hospital on 28th July 1917, he was on leave at 3 King's Road, Bury St.Edmunds 5th to 14th January 1918.
He wounded again and in UK at Ripon from 4th March to 3rd May 1918
4th May posted to 3rd Res Bn York and Lancaster and then on 22nd May to the 13th Battalion. Joined "C" Coy, 5th Battalion June 1918
Army form 50580 completed by his widow in 1919 records his parents and brother dead, survived by 3 sisters

There were more pages of his records, but too badly damaged to read.

The battalion lost just 2 men killed on 20th September, they had just relieved the 4th Yorks on left of the line, with 1/4 KOYLI on their right and 2nd Berks on their left. (The war diary has 5 killed 10 wounded on 19th/20th)
