Born in 1898 in Bury St.Edmunds (4th qtr 4a:822) son of Henry Howard and Ellen Mahala ERITH (née HUNT). Ellen was previously married to William KEMP, an ostler, born in Chedburgh, who died in 1886, aged 32.


1901 census...Aged 3, he was at 6 Foundry Cottages, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Henry Erith [41] iron moulder born Thetford; his mother Ellen [39]; brothers Henry [10], Edwin [8]; sisters Ada [5] and Ivy (Agnes Lily) [1]; half brothers Arthur KEMP [19] iron moulder and Walter KEMP [16] iron moulder. Except for his father, all were born in Bury St.Edmunds

1911 census...Aged 13, he was at 6 Long Brackland with his parents; half brothers Arthur William KEMP (iron turner) and Walter KEMP (iron turner); brothers Henry Alfred (iron moulder) and Edward (carman); sisters Ada Genevieve [13] (shop assistant) and Agnes Lily [11]. His mother had borne 8 children but one had died (Nella Rosa b 1900 d 1900)

His half-brother Arthur Patrick William KEMP died in France on 2nd March 1918 see here


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds in 1914, but was no doubt kept in UK due to his age.
The 4th Suffolks were in trenches ""A" Coy worked on its battle position. "B" Coy worked on wire S of ALBERT ROAD. "D" Coy rested. Casualties 1 killed 1 wounded."
