1891 census...Aged 1, he was at 13 Mustow Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Samuel [44] bricklayer, born Cockfeld; his mother Jane [48] born Icklingham; brothers Henry [18] bricklayer's labourer, born Cockfield, Albert[7] and Spencer [3] both born Bury St.Edmunds; sisters Kate [14] and Ethel [10] both born Bury St.Edmunds. 1901 census...Aged 10, he was at Old Hall Farm, Cockfield with his widower grandfather Samuel Fayers senior [77] born Cockfield; his father Samuel junior; mother, and brother Spencer. 1911 census...Aged 20, he was a Private in the 2nd Norfolks in India. He enlisted in the Army Reserves (No.9098) at Bury St. Edmunds on 7th June 1908, giving his age as 19 years 4 months, a farm labourer, born
Bury St. Edmunds. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall, chest 32 to 34 inches, weighing 126 lbs, dark brown hair, hazel eyes, Church of England. This Reserve service ended when he enlisted in the Norfolk Regiment at Bury St. Edmunds on 11th February 1909. He then gave his age as 20 years, height 5 feet 8 inches, chest 32.5 to 35 inches, weighing 133 lbs. Next of kin, his father Samuel of Cross Green, Cockfield. He was actually in the Suffolk Regiment Reserves at the age of 17, from 4th February 1906. Posted to 1st Battalion Norfolk Regiment on 30th March 1909 and the 2nd Battalion on 15th September 1909. Post to Gibraltar 14th September 1909 and then to India on 14th February 1911, then going to Mespotamia on 6th November 1914 Captured at the surrender of Kut el Amara, he died on 22nd June 1916 from dysentery at Demi Kaps.
