Born Walter Charles on 1st June 1897 in Bury St.Edmunds (2nd qtr 4a:803) son of Walter and Eliza Ellen FROUD (née DUELL)

1901 census...[Walter] Charles, aged 3 was at 65 Raingate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father Walter FROUD [34] furnace stoker/fireman; his mother Eliza [33]; brother Walter Bertie [12]; sisters Emma [10] and Florence [5]. All were born in Bury St.Edmund.

1911 census...Aged 13, Charlie, a grocer's errand boy, was at 32 Raingate Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his parents (mother a corset makers); brother Albert Alexander [7]; sisters Florrie (corset maker), Lily Victoria [9] and Gladys Maude [4].

CWGC and pension card have the family at 4 School Hall Street, Bury St.Edmunds Too many Walter Froud, but this is the 4th Battalion man albeit usually "Charles".


He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds.
25th September saw the 4th Suffolks moving into position for an attack on 26th, by 11:30 pm they were in position on a line running north from Fitzclarence Farm
