Born 29th December 1893 (1st qtr 1894, West Ham 4a:195) son of William and Louisa Harriet GARWOOD (née TWEED). Baptised at All Saints, West Ham on 28th January 1894

1901 census...Aged 7 he was at 54 Avondale Terrace, Devonport with his father William GARWOOD [32] Sgt of Police HMS Dockyard, born Bury St.Edmunds; his mother Louisa [31] born Ousden; brother William (Frank)[8] and sister Hilda [4]. All the children born in West Ham.

1911 census...Aged 17, an office clerk, he was at 81 Kempton Road, East Ham with his parents (father now Metropolitan Police Inspector); brothers William (tea warehouse clerk) and Cecil [9] born Devonport; sister Hilda (apprentice dressmaker).

The pension card has his mother at 42 Northgate Street, Bury St.Edmunds.


He enlisted in Stratford on 14th September 1914 in the Army Service Coprs No.1262, He gave his address as 25 High Street South, East Ham
Renumbered 1374 E.A.Div.Train when embodied on 31st May 1916 ad Driver. Then on 29th July he was posted to 668 Coy, A.S.C.. 24th September 1917 he was compulsorily transferred to the 1st battalion, Cheshire Regiment.
Promoted to Lance Corporal unpaid on 1st May 1918. The Army Form 5080 (living relatives) is too faint to read but was sgned by his father in 1920.
