GOULT, Lemuel Mathias

No.43181, Private, Lemuel Mathias GOULT
Aged 20

7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
formerly 2372, Suffolk Cyclists
Died of his Wounds on Tuesday, 12th December 1916

Born Samuel (perhaps a typo) Mathias GOULT in 1896 (3rd qtr Bury St.Edmunds 4a:794), son of William and Phyllis Jane GOULT (née WRIGHT)

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at 106 Cannon Street, Bury St.Edmunds with his father William GOULT [40] oil and clourman's assistant, born Thurlow; his mother Phyllis [39] born Kennett; sisters Winifred [15] born Bury St.Edmunds, Octavia [12] born Kennett and Elfrida [10] born Kennett.

1911 census...Aged 14,he was still at 106 Cannon Street with his parents (father now oil and colourman); sisters Octavia (tailoress), Effie (milliner) and Cassenia Lydia [4]

He enlisted in Bury St.Edmunds. Died at No. 41 Casualty Clearing Station at Wanquentin, France. With no service record available and dying of wounds, we cannot usually say where or when he was wounded, but in this instance the nurse's letter tells us he was wounded on the 11 th December. The battalion had not been involved in any large operation for some time and the war diary simply says "11th.. Quiet". CWGC record none killed on 11th and just two dying at the CCS on the 12th.

Lemuel Goult is buried in Wanquentin Communal Cemetery Extension, France 1:A:11
